Senior Photos at Whitby Abbey: A Trombone, a Dream Location, and an Unforgettable Shoot

When an American family originally from Utah contacted me about senior photos for their daughter, I was excited to get involved. They’d moved to West Suffolk but dreamed of a shoot at the iconic Whitby Abbey. To make it happen, they planned their holiday around my availability and secured exclusive access to the historic grounds.

Senior portraits are about capturing individuality, and this session was a perfect blend of drama, fun, and personal meaning. Their daughter, a talented trombone player, and wanting her dad's musical instrument featured in the photos. Photographing her with her trombone added depth to the session. I loved the idea—it added a unique, personal touch while creating a dramatic backdrop against Whitby Abbey’s ruins.

From the moment we stepped into the Abbey’s grounds, the atmosphere was magical. The stone arches and sweeping views of the North Sea created a stunning backdrop. Despite the grandeur of the setting, we kept the session light-hearted and fun.

What made this session extra meaningful was the family’s commitment to making it happen. Traveling from West Suffolk and arranging everything around my availability showed how much these memories meant to them. Being trusted to create something so personal is what I love most about photography.
